There's been a lot of talk online recently about Sean Manning's claim that he's going to make the namesake imprint of Simon & Schuster the A24 of publishing. So…a publishing imprint that is cool? Quirky and not commercial? Is embroidered on the hat of that guy in a Silver Lake coffee shop working on his screenplay at 2p.m. on a weekday?
Manning’s plan is set to launch with a web series in which authors have $100 and a set amount of time to spend it at an indie bookstore. Fun…maybe. Since it’s relying on authors to have personalities that translate well to video, things could get boring real fast. I’m excited to see how they attempt to coax famously introverted/not-camera-ready authors to perform in front of a camera. But I’m also excited to see what exactly Sean Manning thinks the A24 of publishing looks like.
